We’ve all heard that nursery rhymes are important for language development. More specifically, nursery rhymes help with installing pre-verbal skills in children, such as turn-taking, copying, eye contact and joint attention. Pre-verbal skills are a prerequisite to verbal skills. Nursery skills also improve imagination.
Nursery rhymes enable children to hear, identify and manipulate the different sounds that form words. Nursery rhymes offer the children a playful, interesting, engaging and a developmentally appropriate foundation through which they can experiment with the different mechanics of language.
Now, did you know that not all nursery rhyme singing experiences your child has actually benefits them in the above ways? 🥺 🤔
If you ‘watch’ nursery rhymes on a screen, this may not actually deliver on the vast benefits that nursery rhymes possess.
As you will find out from this video, watching nursery rhymes doesn’t encourage some of the key elements that make up communication, of which conversational skills are a part of!
In order for nursery rhymes to benefit your child, sing them together with your child, and while your child is facing you. Assist your child to join in the actions as you do! 😊
