Murders of young women are occurring in Paris. The mysterious "Swamp Killer" repeats his pattern from crime to crime, but he goes even further and begins calling the police to report his crimes. Inspector Maigret is furious and willing to take any risk if it will help put the maniac behind bars. After yet another murder, when suspicion falls on a butcher from the ill-fated neighborhood, the Inspector attempts to lure the killer into a trap.
