Voigtlander 58mm + GFX 50R (WEDDING & REAL LIFE REVIEW!)
Today I just want to share my thoughts and some sample photos about the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 adapted to the GFX 50R.
If you like adapting lenses to your mirrorless system, I understand how you might be curious on how this lens performs, and what kind of images you get to make with it.
When it comes to image quality, I can say this is one of the finest lenses you can adapt to your GFX.
The rendering of the images is unique. Like looking at a painting. I’ve said in my previous video this is the only lens I’d keep if I can only choose one. I’ll stand by that statement.
The build quality is great, but the handling is even better. The small size of this lens really make it painless to use and carry all day. Storing it in your bag is easy. If you are a wedding photographer, you know packing camera bags can sometimes be a science.
Speaking of weddings, I have used this lens on weddings.
Yes, it’s amazing.
I have used this lens with the GFX for about two years. When it comes to shooting portraits, this lens is just amazing. Adapted to the GFX, it becomes even better.
However, it’s really easy to miss focus. You need to pair this combo with a fast camera that can autofocus if you find that a problem.
What do I mean?
The GFX will not keep up with all the high speed action that may happen during a wedding.
You’re going to want another camera that autofocuses to keep up with all that is happening around you. You’re also going to want a camera that shoots fast, atleast 7 frames per second fast.
Getting a grip for the 50R is also important. If you are a 50S user, that’s one less thing to worry about. But the ergonomics are so much better with an attached grip.
An extra battery is necessary too. I run with two GFX batteries on a regular wedding, with my other camera compensating for all the shot in-between.
With this combo, you will get vignetting around the corners, but it can be fixed on post. Imperfections are there, but that’s what makes it beautiful.
You will not be producing clinical images with this lens and camera. There’s a human feeling to it that’s hard for me to articulate.
This combination is not for everyone.
