What is an AV fistula?
An arteriovenous fistula, also called a fistula, is constructed by sewing a vein (arterial vein) in the arm together with an artery (artery). This causes the blood speed in the vein to increase and the blood vessel to enlarge. This vein is later used to insert a needle, from which blood is taken out and inserted during dialysis, in order to clean the blood of waste substances in case of kidney failure.
The fistula needs time to develop so that it can be used for dialysis treatment. This has matured for about 6 weeks
This is the first time the fistula is used, 1/1/2015, a good start to the new year 2015
Update, got a new kidney June 2016 after 2.5 years on dialysis👍
PS: the nurse does not measure the blood pressure but only a small pressure to find the fistula (instead of a rubber band around the upper arm).
