We often hear about "dark scents," or perfumes with dark characteristics. But rarely is this concept of a dark fragrance actually defined.
In this latest edition of Fragrantica Talks, Nicola, John, and Adam try to define what can make a perfume composition "dark" and identify dark perfume notes.
They find that the word could define a whole category unto itself. Dark perfumes can involve any of the following traits:
dark in scent profile, meaning it lacks anything very light in terms of texture, scent, or the effect it has on the nose
dark in terms of theme – does it present sad, frightening, or otherwise disturbing imagery as conveyed through scent?
likewise: the difference between intended theme (as in the marketing materials and/or descriptions from the brands) versus dark in the outcome (if the perfume smells dark in its profile regardless of intentions)
dark scents in terms of their synesthetic properties
