Our ability to feel, understand, and control emotions is known as emotional intelligence (EI) and is considered crucial for human well-being. For centuries, we thought emotions and cognition were two separate things. Today, we know that the two constantly interact. The most relevant model of what is known as EQ was developed in 1990 by John Mayer and Peter Salovey.

CLASSROOM EXERCISE
In the following activity, students will learn about emotional intelligence, how it impacts life, and how to improve it.

Divide the class into five groups and assign each group one of the following emotions: fear, anger, excitement, confidence, boredom. Ask each group to suggest ways their emotion or state might affect someone taking a test.

Show Sprouts’ video on emotional intelligence.

Ask the groups how they can perceive, use, understand, and manage their assigned emotion and how it might help with testing.

Emotions and states are typically accompanied by physical manifestations of that emotion. For example, sadness is often accompanied by loss of appetite, fatigue, and slower movement.

Ask the groups which physical manifestations of their assigned emotions they can use to better recognize them.
