Dark Medicine – Semmelweis
Today, medicine is seen as an authority and a sacred institution. But like every institution, it has a dark past. The story of Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis shows how medicine was terribly wrong, and how doctors' poor judgment cost many women their lives. In 19th-century Vienna, the young doctor was rejected by his colleagues for recommending something scandalous: washing hands.

In this activity, students learn how medical and scientific advances work and how beliefs and traditions sometimes hinder progress.
Ask students if they believe doctors are always right.
Ask them if they can name examples from history or even today where doctors have been horribly wrong—compared to what they know.

Ask them what they think Semmelweis could have done to
change the minds of his colleagues back then.
Ask students if they think there are practices today that are similarly
rejected as handwashing was back then.
