Hermaphrodite: Alexandra | Being Young
Sasha was born a girl. Or a boy. It's a complicated question; it would be more accurate to say that Alexandra was born a hermaphrodite (which is by no means an offensive term)—the child had both male and female sexual characteristics and reproductive organs.
Hermaphroditism is a condition that affects a tiny percentage of people. However, the problem does exist.
Sasha was abandoned by her mother at the maternity hospital, and she grew up in an orphanage. There, she was often bullied by other children who couldn't tell whether she was a boy or a girl.
As Sasha grew, her problems only worsened. She had no breasts, a stubbled face, and her genitals were different from everyone else's. No one could, or would, help her. Until, at technical school, she met someone who was touched by her story and helped her find a doctor in Kyiv who performed plastic surgery for free.
There were several more after that.
Now our heroine finally feels at home in her own skin: she's taking hormone therapy, has a boyfriend (and sex is fine, too), and dreams of working in radio.
