In chapter 2 of our Bitcoin for Enterprise course, Evan Freeman breaks Bitcoin down to its most basic elements, just two core message types.
These are transaction messages and block headers.
Transaction messages are the transactions that Bitcoin users submit to the network for nodes to validate, collate and timestamp into blocks. Block headers represent the proof of work that nodes perform in the process of capturing network activity into blocks. Each block header contains a direct reference to the previous block header, forming a new link in the blockchain.
