When a Dog Objects to Leash Pressure - Jeff Gellman Seminars (2019)
A video from my Petaluma, CA seminar showing how to troubleshoot and work through a dog that objects to leash pressure. This dog was not newly introduced to a collar or a leash, his owner had been working with him for a few months and this was well practiced behavior. Anytime the dog did not want to do something, the dog would say “no” by biting the leash, thrashing about, etc. All of which is extremely common in our world, as we have seen just about every behavior a dog will offer. The dog simply does not want to go from point A to point B, and this is his way of saying so. The best thing you can do if or when you run into this, is to just work the dog through it. Remain calm, work the dog, but do not stop the session. If I had allowed the dogs behavior to stop me from progressing, all I would really be teaching the dog is that his behavior worked which allowed him to stop progressing toward the end goal— which is simply to get onto a place bed. By not giving in, allowing the dog to process, and continually moving forward with the session, I showed the dog a couple of valuable lessons. 1. I am a firm but fair leader. I am not over correcting or yielding to his nonsense. And 2. His old patterns and habits that may have worked with his owner are no longer useful. So the dog learns that following along with his handler is actually the best choice, and we will see his decision making get better not only in this scenario but in general. I troubleshoot many similar issues at all of my seminars. I show owners hands on exactly what to do and how to address whatever they are struggling with.
