NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has discovered ancient mud cracks that provide evidence of long wet-dry cycles on the Red Planet.
The cracks, which were found in a transitional region between clay-rich and sulfate-rich layers, are thought to have formed when water evaporated from the Martian surface, leaving behind cracks in the mud.
The discovery of these mud cracks is significant because it provides further evidence that Mars once had a much wetter climate than it does today.
