The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a stunning new image of the protostellar object OH 339.88-1.26, located 8,900 light-years away in the constellation Ara. The image reveals a complex network of gas and dust, with the protostar itself hidden at the center.
Protostars are young stars that are still in the process of forming. They are surrounded by a cloud of gas and dust, which eventually collapses under its own gravity to form the star. The Hubble image shows the intricate details of this process, with the gas and dust swirling and clumping together.
OH 339.88-1.26 is an astrophysical maser, which means that it emits radiation at microwave wavelengths.The Hubble observations of OH 339.88-1.26 were made using the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3).
The Hubble observations of OH 339.88-1.26 were complemented by data from other observatories, such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).
