The main reason I created a YouTube channel after considering it for years was because I wanted to talk about toxic and abusive relationships. They are unfortunately too common and do not discriminate based on age, gender, race, or social class. By talking about this subject openly, I hope that I can help reduce the stigma and shame surrounding it and foster more awareness and discussion. Yes, this is a very personal and difficult story to tell, but I am not ashamed. I was able to leave, and I want others to know that they are not alone in their experiences and they can also move on successfully.

I decided that the best starting point for this discussion would be for me to tell my own story. This is a long story, and I can't go into every detail, so I have split the story into four parts: how we met, how things started to go awry, when it became truly abusive, and how I eventually left.

This is the story of how things begin to go awry.

This will likely be the most universal part of the story. An abuser will find a reason to make their partner out to be a bad person. They will then begin a process of isolating their partner, either because they can't trust the other or they'll make it seem as if they're helping to protect them from others who have bad intentions. It's usually a slow process and doesn't seem like a big deal, but when it's done, it is essential for the abuser to maintain control over their partner.

Why do abusers do this? Generally the roots lie in deep insecurities and a need to control everything because of those insecurities. For a very insecure person, being hurt or vulnerable is completely abhorrent. They will do anything to prevent this. Step one is reducing interaction with the outside world. This reduces the likelihood their partner could cheat or leave them (i.e. hurt them). There are also other factors and nuances involved in this.

If you have a friend or family member who has recently gotten into a new relationship, and you see and hear from them less and less, please reach out and say hello. If they are in an abusive or toxic relationship they likely cannot talk much, but it is incredibly helpful for them to know there are others out there who care about them. I will talk about what you can do to help in a future video.
