Road of the 52 Tunnels - Mount Pasubio | First Army Trail
In this video, we take a beautiful walk, with explanations, along the Road of the 52 Tunnels, on the Pasubio massif, also known as the Road of the First Army.
This rock path was created out of necessity during the First World War, to provide shelter from enemy fire while carrying supplies to the front lines at the summit of Pasubio. It is effectively a mule track, whose size and curve radius allow the passage of two fully loaded donkeys.
Excavation began in February 1917 and was completed in record time in November of the same year.
The road's creator was Captain Leopoldo Motti, a military engineer, and it was built by the 33rd Mining Company of the 5th Regiment of the Italian Army's Engineer Corps.
Today, Pasubio separates the Veneto from Trentino-Alto Adige, while in 1915, at the beginning of the war, it divided the Italian Empire from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
A very interesting route, both for the hike and the scenery, and for the rich history it carries.
The hike is 6,555 meters, 2,335 of which are in tunnels. It takes about 3 hours to reach the Rifugio Gen. Achille Papa and 2.5 hours to return from the "main" road.
I highly recommend taking a walk there.
