A Very Different Death of Cinema in India (Video Essay) | Deep Cut
For the longest time, the topic of whether cinema is dying, especially due to the push to digital after the pandemic forced many theatres to shut down, has been steered by North American critics and video essayists. And as someone who constantly follows what they are saying, I think I had started to lose sight of what was happening in #India. To be specific, in #Bollywood, and how cinema is dying a very different death over here.
I have been wanting to talk about this particular issue that apparently nobody is talking about for a long time. Or even when they're talking about, they aren't looking at the bigger picture. Probably because the bigger picture is scary AF. However, another onslaught of boycotts against #KareenaKapoorKhan's casting in #Ramayana and #AkshayKumar's #Prithviraj, regulations on #OTT platforms, and a dip in the level of #film criticism has forced my hand to show how the #CBFC, the #BJP government, and #SushantSinghRajput's death has led to the death of cinema in India.
