Gelli Plate, various stencil and printing techniques on the gel plate
A video featuring various gelli art stencil printing techniques on a single artwork. The goal is to create a beautiful layered piece of artwork, as well as to try out different stencil and printing techniques. You can apply these techniques later in your own visual work. I also want to show that you can work layer upon layer with paint. If your prints do not look satisfactory, you can simply apply a new layer over your artwork until you are completely satisfied.
The first thing I want to show is a structure where I roll half of the gel plate with acrylic paint, then I spray some water onto the plate. The paint blends together slightly. I let it dry on the plate while I create a letter stencil. This letter is cut from vinyl paper (Amsterdam art pad).
I place the negative letter (i.e., the letter that is the hole in the paper) onto the gel plate and roll it in paint. Using the paint still on the roller, I then make a small square underneath the letter and press letters from a magazine onto it. I gently rub over the magazine paper and then remove the paper from the plate. The letters remain on the gel plate. This does not work with all magazines. Especially the more luxurious magazines work well on the gel plate. In the video, I use Vogue. It is important that your paint layer is not too thick and that you do not rub too hard over the paper. This technique also works with photos. Use high-contrast photos for the best result. Next to the first A, I place another piece of text. Personally, I find torn text the most beautiful, because it creates a nice border.
For the bottom A, I place the cut-out A over the dried letters and go over it with red paint using a roller. I let the entire gel plate dry and then roll it in with a light color. paint. I place a piece of paper on the gel plate. Rub it firmly and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then peel all the layers of paint off the Gelli Plate.
I really like the left side, but the right side could use some work. That is why I am trying a print of a bird from the laser printer. A print from an inkjet printer does not work. Using the laser printer works the same way as a print from a magazine. A thin layer of paint and then gently rub it over the paper.
Because the artwork is becoming quite dark, I apply a new layer over the work on the right side. I get to work with the texture of bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard. Furthermore, I will show the ballpoint pen technique again, demonstrate how to use soft pastel and oil pastel, and make a stencil of a star.
