We're making a 3D model of a Rubik's Cube in Blender today.
You need to be able to do this for several reasons:
1) Learn Blender hotkeys (key combinations for scaling, enabling 3D object editing mode in Blender, creating new loops/edges, the hotkey for starting a render in Blender, and more);
2) Try assigning colors to objects;
3) Try setting up a camera and enlarging light sources in Blender.

Step-by-step instructions:
Open Blender - it already has almost everything (a cube to use to create a Rubik's cube, a camera, and one light source);
Select an existing cube in the Blender scene (press the A key or draw a box around it);
Then enlarge the cube in Blender by pressing the S key (scale, scaling in Blender, scaling in Blender), entering the number 2 on the keyboard, and pressing Enter;
Switch to 3D object editing mode in Blender, either by selecting "Edit Mode" from the list or by pressing the Tab key. I activated Blender's edge mode;
I pressed CTRL+R to add additional loops/edges to the cube in Blender. I did this on all faces.
Then I found the Material button on the right and added four colors (black, blue, yellow, and red) to the stack, although I needed seven.
I selected the entire cube and assigned the black color to the entire cube in Blender by clicking the Assign button. While holding down Shift and selecting the desired faces, I selected the desired color and assigned the color to the selected faces using the Assign button in Blender.
I assigned the colors to the faces in Blender and pressed F12 to get a quick render of our Rubik's Cube. I also added light sources and ran another quick render.
