EXPLANATION: In standard 3.PS1.3 and 5.PS1.1, students build familiarity with physical properties of substances that make each substance unique. When two materials are mixed, the result can be either a “mixture” or a new compound. Students should use their knowledge of physical properties to provide support for the argument that the mixing of substances created a new substance or resulted in a mixture that consists of the original substance.
