The harem in the Chinese empire and its various dynasties was created so that the emperor could bear children and have a successor. However, many of the concubines who ended up in the harem became powerful women, such as Wu Zetian, Zhen, Concubine Wang, and Cixi. However, the harem also had a dark side, with much abuse and corruption.
