He emphasized the necessity of achieving a genuine Palestinian state governed by a unified authority. Blinken added that there will be no regional integration in the region without recognition of a Palestinian state and the development of the Palestinian Authority. He added, "There is a humanitarian tragedy in both Israel and Palestine, and it must be brought to an end." Tensions are rising between Israel and many of its allies, particularly the administration of US President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, over the war in Gaza.
President Biden has reportedly not spoken with Benjamin Netanyahu for three weeks amid growing disagreements between the two over the Israeli prime minister's handling of the Gaza conflict. Two leading Israeli newspapers reported on Monday that the White House is "appalled" by Netanyahu's lack of a vision for ending the conflict and his lack of support for a future Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen said the world needs to end the Gaza war quickly. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Pedersen said he was deeply concerned about the "widening scope of the war and the escalation." During a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said the war in Gaza is dragging the entire region into grave dangers, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He added, "We see no indication from Israel of stopping the war and the escalation... Our priority is to find a path to de-escalation, and this depends on stopping the war in Gaza." The Saudi Foreign Minister stated, "The international community must do more to stop the war in Gaza," adding that "the continued suffering in Gaza will lead to cycles of escalation."
The war erupted after a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7th, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli sources. In response, Israel vowed to "eliminate" Hamas and has since waged a massive campaign of bombing and devastating airstrikes, followed by a ground offensive beginning on October 27th. This has resulted in the deaths of 24,448 people, the majority of whom are women, teenagers, and children, according to the latest figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
