The New York Times reported last night, citing three sources, that Trump is expected to nominate Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, adding that the decision "is not final, but it appears Trump has settled on Rubio, who was on his list of potential vice-presidential candidates."
Rubio's name has been consistently mentioned throughout the past week as one of the leading candidates to head American diplomacy, along with former Ambassador to Germany Rick Grenell. When asked last week if he expected to hold a significant position in the Trump administration, Rubio told CNN, "I am always interested in serving this country."
Trump's nomination of the hardline Cuban-American congressman marks a significant shift in the relationship between the two men. In 2016, they competed for the Republican presidential nomination, with Rubio describing Trump as a "fraud" and "the most vulgar person to ever aspire to the presidency."
Rubio was born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents and studied political science at the University of Florida, graduating in 1993. In 2010, he was elected to the Senate with the support of the Tea Party, a group of radical Republicans who later rejoined the Republican Party after Barack Obama's election.

Analysts, according to a report published Tuesday in a Chinese newspaper, believe that Trump's selection of Waltz as National Security Advisor signals a tougher policy toward China in the new US administration, given Waltz's reputation as one of the "China hawks" in American politics.
Waltz is a US Congressman from Florida, a retired Army National Guard officer, and a veteran. He was a fervent supporter of Trump and an outspoken critic of current President Joe Biden, and is known for his skepticism about US aid to Ukraine.
Regarding China, Waltz is considered one of the most hawkish members of Congress. He is a member of the House Republican Task Force on China, which examines how Washington competes with Beijing.
He has described China as an "existential threat" to US interests and was among those calling for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. He introduced the resolution, stating that "the Chinese Communist Party has carried out a number of egregious acts that would disqualify China from hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics."
