WATCH THIS Before Installing A 230v Mains Hookup Inlet | DIY Camper Van
Here’s how to install a mains hookup inlet in your DIY campervan
1. Measure where you would like the inlet to be placed then trace around the mains inlet with a pen
2. Drill a hole large enough to allow a jigsaw blade to fit through
3. Tape off the perimeter of the outline to ensure the foot of the jigsaw doesn’t scratch your van’s paintwork
4. Using a jigsaw blade designed specifically to cut metal, slowly follow your pen line, allowing the blade to do the work
5. Remove the cut-out, file the edges, clean any metal debris and then paint red oxide on the raw edges to prevent them from rusting
6. Place the mains inlet in position and use a pen to mark where the four screws will be placed. Take a small drill bit and create pilot holes on the four marks to later screw in to
7. Feed your mains cable through. Use flexible cable and ensure it is rated to work below freezing, I recommend Arctic cable.
8. Carefully score the outer layer of insulation with some wire cutters around 10cm from the end and pull away the insulation
9. Now strip the ends of the 3 wires using an automatic wire stripper. Brown is for live, Blue is for neutral and Green and Yellow is for earth
10. Remove the back plate of the inlet, feed the cable through it and terminate the wires in the corresponding terminals, each live, neutral and earth should be marked on the back of the inlet.
11. Lightly tug each cable and then secure it to the inlet
12. Replace the back cover, push the inlet in place and use 4 screws to install it to the exterior of your van ensuring that the weatherproof gasket is installed between the inlet and the vans wall
13. (Optional) You can now add exterior sealant (Sikaflex 522) around the edges to further weatherproof the inlet
14. And you’re done. All sockets should be tested before use and have appropriate protection.
