A double exposure essential is two exposures stacked on top of one another. Usually there is a light layer and a dark layer blended together.
Double exposures can be produced through digital softwares like Lightroom or photoshop. They can also be developed in some cameras.
Double exposures first appeared in the 1860s where sometimes they were called ghosting. This was done with film photographs and worked on in the dark room.
