Sigma bond
1. A type of covalent bond which is formed by axial overlap of s-s , s-p, and p-p orbitals.
2. Due to axial axial overlapping, it is strong
3. There is a free rotation around the sigma bond
4.The electron cloud is symmetrical.
pi bond
1. A type of covalent bond which is formed by sideway or lateral overlap of p-p orbitals.
2. Due to sideway overlapping, it is weak.
3. There is no free rotation around pi bond
4.The electron cloud is unsymmetrical & consists of two charged clouds one above and below the plane due to sideway overlap
Nitrogen molecule is a homonuclear molecule which is formed by overlapping atomic orbitals. In N2, three unpaired electrons are shared between two nitrogen atoms resulting in the formation of triple bond. Among the triple bond, first bond is sigma and the other two are pi bonds.
