The Kremlin refused to answer journalist Vladimir Pozner's question about whether atheism is criminalized in Russia, Dozhd TV reports. Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to President Vladimir Putin, said the TV presenter's question was "rhetorical" and "not within the Kremlin's prerogative."

Yesterday, Vladimir Pozner, on his show on Channel One, asked whether he too faced criminal prosecution for being an atheist. The journalist was commenting on the sentencing of video blogger Ruslan Sokolovsky, who was given a three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence for "catching Pokémon" in a church and criticizing the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). In announcing the blogger's sentence, the judge stated, among other things, that Sokolovsky "denies the existence of Jesus and the Prophet Muhammad" and thus allegedly committed a crime.
