Sri Lanka - Facts
The Portuguese arrived on the island nation of Sri Lanka in 1505. They called it Ceilao. That name was later changed when it became a British Crown Colony. They westernized it into Ceylon, a name that lasted through its independence in 1948 and up until 1972 when it became Sri Lanka.
