When planning a trip to Gibraltar, a must-see on your travel map is St. Michael's Cave. This unique place in the entire Iberian Peninsula, but also in Europe, is a karst cave - housing two smaller caves and a complex of tunnels. Hanging and beautifully lit stalactites give the feeling of reaching a completely different, almost cinematic world.
For a long time, it was believed that the Cathedral Cave there was bottomless, which is why St. Michael's Cave became the subject of one of Gibraltar's most famous legends. It was believed to be one end of the underground Ley Tunnel, over 24 kilometers long, running under the Strait of Gibraltar. Legend has it that Barbary macaques found their way to the famous Rock 🐒.
