Mount Teide, Island Volcano
At the center of an island in the Atlantic, near Africa lies a dormant giant, Mount Tay-dah. The sheer magnitude of this sleeping giant can only be appreciated from space. On a recent visit we stood near the center of the crater, which has a diameter of 12 miles. Tay-dah is the third-highest volcanic island in the world, if measured from the sea bed to the summit it is over 24,600 feet high. It’s the highest mountain in Spain and also the highest of any island in the Atlantic Ocean.
Walking through the lava fields and ejected rock zones is an out of this world experience. The mountain is often concealed by clouds, but on the day we visited, it was high above the clouds which shrouded the lower slopes of the island. Tay-dah is located in the Canary Islands on Tenerife. It is the most visited national park in Europe with 3 millions visitors per year. Tay-dah’s last eruption was in 1906. When in Tenerife, a visit to Tay-dah is a must see experience.
