Controversy arose regarding the presence of Andrés Escobar, a city councilman from Cali representing the Democratic Center party.
Why?
Andrés Escobar is currently under investigation after being photographed carrying a weapon and pointing it at protesters in the streets of Cali, the capital of Valle del Cauca, in 2021.
The Attorney General's Office has been investigating Escobar's actions. In June 2023, Escobar was summoned for questioning to determine if there was sufficient evidence to bring charges against him. The investigation seeks to clarify the facts and establish whether he committed any crime related to his behavior during the national strike.
Escobar explained that his use of the weapon was an act of deterrence against protesters and offered an apology. Authorities continue to evaluate his conduct and the circumstances surrounding those events. For now, there is no conviction, and he remains a city councilman in Cali.
While his party colleagues, such as Sebastián López, Claudia Carrasquilla, and Andrés Rodríguez "Gury," celebrated and defended his presence, opposition councilman José Luis Marín "Aquino" argued against Escobar's presence in the chamber.
