BUSINESS OWNER HOSPITALIZED FROM PATIO HEATER FIRE
Last week a patio heater exploded at a Huntington Harbour restaurant, and the owner is currently hospitalized with 3rd degree burns. Vegilicious, the little Japanese vegan cafe located in the Harbour shopping center, is co-owned by a husband and wife team, Akira Nakao and Atsuko Ana. If you’ve ever been there then you know that they have no employees and run the business completely by themselves. Akira cooks, while Ana works as the waitress and hostess.
The patio heater was a new addition to the cafe, and many customers enjoyed having it there. However, due to an unknown reason, Ana’s clothing was caught on fire while she was serving a table next to the heater. She was instantly engulfed in flames, and customers had to help put the fire out.
She was in surgery for 11 hours while doctors took skin grafts from other parts of her body to cover the burns on her legs. Her husband, Akira, has stated that she is recovering, but suffering massive pain from the burn areas, and the areas where skin was taken for the grafts.
He also estimates that the stay in the ICU is costing them over $16,000 a day. A GoFundMe account has been setup for the couple. Links to that account are in the description, as well as links to the Vegilicious Facebook page, where Akira has been keeping everyone up to date on Ana’s progress.

LOCAL ACTIVISTS STAGE DEMONSTRATION AT BEACH AND YORKTOWN
Local Activists staged a demonstration on Monday at the proposed site for The York housing project. Last week the Surf City Sentinel released the proposal plans for the 6 story structure, and residents are furious because the project will have 192 apartments, but only 63 parking spots. The tension was further heated just a few days later when a pedestrian was killed at the same intersection. Huntington Beach residents feel strongly that this city is not set-up for high density development, and that Sacramento is using the guise of affordable housing to enable large property developers to bully their way into communities where they were previously not allowed to build in.

BURNING LAUNDRY SUMMONS HBFD
The Huntington Beach Fire Department was called last week to extinguish a dryer lint fire.
Just under 3,000 laundry fires are reported each year causing an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in underwear loss. Failure to clean the dryer lint screen and the filter are the leading causes of laundry fires and January is the peak of the laundry fire season.

SURF CITY MARATHON STREET CLOSURES
Hey, what are you doing on Sunday??? Wanna get up early and run a marathon???
This Sunday February 6th over 20,000 people will be Usain Bolting down the PCH to prove that they have zero chill. The Surf City Marathon starts at 6:30am at the Hilton Waterfront Hotel and runs up the PCH to Warner Avenue, with a cool detour down Seapoint and around Edwards. Expect the roads to be closed to vehicle traffic from 1am to 2pm.
