2-Step Triads | Music Theory. Do this 2-step approach for error-free triads. Learn how to build triads in just 2 easy steps. Chords are built upon a foundation which is called the Triad, a chord consisting only of 3 notes in intervals of thirds. Each of the notes are labeled as such: Root for the base note; 3rd for the middle note; and 5th for the uppermost note. Triads has 4 basic qualities, each one defined by their characteristic sounds and number of half steps between its notes. The major, minor, diminished and augmented.
