Polit Affairs - 21 Century will be Turkey's century. This is what Recep Tayyip Erdogan, president of Turkey said a few month ago. Maybe it's not considerable enough for foreigners to understand it, but this opinion and policy is is defined as a huge threat in Tehran. inside Iran, this Turkish plan is not a secret to anyone, as Ankara is doing all it can to finally get its share of Iranian borders, as it has tried for more than 5 centuries to have it.
Utterly aggressive foreign policy of Turkey in recent years, specially after the 2016 coup, has caused dissatisfaction from many powers and superpowers, from Washington, to Paris, Moscow and Berlin. but, Its not just them, feeling Erdogan's Turkey is becoming a dangerous actor all over middle east, central Asia and even Africa. Turkey's historic opponent and sometime friend, Iran has also become a prey in Ankara's dangerous game of Power.
Days ago, I saw a report on Turkish news outlets, Saying a new Anti Iranian organization called National Parliament of the Southern Azerbaijan has been established in Turkish capital city. Southern Azerbaijan is what they call Iran's north-west region which includes big cities such as Tabriz, Ardabil, and Urmia. most of Iranian citizens in these cities are Azeris, and this has brought an illusion to Erdogan's thoughts, that he could tear them apart from homeland Iran.
This is not a new expansionist policy in Turkey. the Ottoman Empire also tried numerously and waged many wars to occupy these cities in past 5 centuries And did not succeed. so Erdogan is just reviving the so called Ottomanism.
The Ottoman Empire once came to the conclusion, that it is simply not able to control Iran and Iranians also reached a point and understood they were not also able to remove Turkey from the map of this region. so they have had a fragile but effective balance and ceasefire for almost 400 years. but now Turkey under Erdogan, is destroying this balance and truce.
Maybe he feels Iran is now surrounded by problems and weaker than before, so its time for him to get as more as he can. he has introduced a plan called the Turkic world, alongside his friend Devlet Bagceli, a few month ago with a map, showing parts of Iran, republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Syria, all of Central Asia and even China as regions either under control of Ankara or annexed to it.
Erdogan's belly dance in foreign policy and not promising economic outlook, originates from his unique way of interacting with powers and neighbors. Everything is an instrument for him to be used for power projection. Islam, Turkic racism and and NATO membership, are his main instruments to grow influence and wage wars.
Erdogan and his puppet president in Baku, Ilham Aliyev would like to separate North-west of Iran after conquering Armenia.
Up to now, the government in Tehran, has not done much to warn Ankara and to stop their efforts for igniting a civil war inside Iran. I am pretty sure Ankara won't be able to work it out, as Iranians and specially Azeris are patriots and loyal to unity of their country. but wonder if these efforts are just Erdogan's ideas or thoughts given to him by his NATO compatriots.
Here are reasons to prove Turkey's evil plans against Iran and in the region as a whole won't work out.
As I said he has three instruments for growing his influence. the first one is NATO. Turkey is a vital member of NATO, but its selfish policies in recent years has caused dissatisfaction among other member countries. Turkey's dispute with Greece, its close relations with Russia and the recent move to get special concessions from Sweden and Norway in order to let them in the coalition. even some member states have asked to remove Ankara from NATO. so Erdogan won't be able to continue his game inside NATO.
the second pillar for him is the Turkic claim. He tries to show himself as the bigger brother of other nations with Turkic origins, but except for Azerbaijan, no other country has welcomed his initiatives, for example, Uzbekistan also claims to be the leader of Turkic world. even inside republic of Azerbaijan, people don't see Turkey as their bigger brother as there have been many historical differences and disputes between Turks in Turkey and Azeris. so this one has limited potentials too.
and the third pillar is Islam. Turkey wants to show itself as the leader of the Islamic states. this claim has been disputed by many Islamic countries specially Iran, Saudi Arabia and even Egypt.
Also Turkey is now experiencing unprecedented economic issues and very high inflation rate. is short, Turkey does not have enough money, to invest on its aggressive foreign policy.
It may be able to reach temporal small success in Caucasus or Syria, but to challenge Iran, even if Iran has become weak and isolated, I don't believe could work out for Ankara.
