How this film came to be...
With COVID-19 throwing our school’s Audio/Video Tech program’s usual plans in disarray, any sort of long-form project or student news assignment was out of the question. Our teacher tentatively assigned us an independent video project, which was intended to be a mere two-three minute video of whatever you desired (that was still school-appropriate, of course).
Me being me — taking these assignments way too seriously than they should be taken — wanted to be make something as brutally honest as possible and test my storytelling skills. I conceived of a short film that would chronicle the ups and downs of a student struggling to adjust to online school; something funny, relatable, and potentially helpful. Realizing I had a lot of solid avenues I could take the story, I expanded the idea into an eleven page script, equating to about an eight-to-ten minute long film. For the version I would submit to class, I would condense the film’s ideas into a two-three minute segment. Simple, right? Not exactly.
As I continued to trim the script, it began losing all the more frivolous components, in turn, losing the humor. I could have gone the avenue of taking two random pages from the script and just filming those as a sort of sneak-preview version, but once again, the nuance was lost in the individual chunks, and it became a sad, existential bore. The individual parts did not work on their own, they needed to be apart of a collective whole. I found myself in a sort-of creative paralysis that I had never encountered before, and my mind immediately turned to one of my favorite films: ‘ADAPTATION.’ (2002).
This film, ultimately, is not a straight parody of ‘Adaptation.,’ but does use it as a springboard, in terms of that movie's meta/autobiographical slant. If you’ve never seen ‘Adaptation.,’ I implore you to do so, but nevertheless, please enjoy this short, sweet, and matter-of-fact film that I spent WAY too long working on (or... not working on). It’s not perfect, some of the sound gets a little funky, for example, but it feels right, and most importantly, it feels good.
