One of my favorite funk-rock drum parts is Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats – Need Strange. When you watch Smith play this tune live you'll see he often plays the hi-hat with both his right stick and the foot pedal at the same time. You'll notice it more near the end of the video.

Whether Smith does this for the unique sound the technique produces, the time-keeping advantages or simply because Smith just can't keep any limb still while drumming, using this technique does present a unique advantage in funk drumming – the “Es” and “Ahs” are always open on the hi-hat, making it easy to throw in an open hi hat accent with the left stick.
Funk drumming has a unique feel which often emphasizes the syncopated “Es” and “Ahs” in grooves and fills. The beats below use the double hi-hat technique, and beat #s 2 – 6 use an open hi-hat stick stroke.
