Once, there lived a young man who was very proud of his healthy and beautiful heart. One day, the young man was standing in the middle of the town and he began shouting. “People, look at me. I have the most beautiful heart in the valley.”
Many people looked at him and were stunned to see his beautiful heart in a perfect shape, without any flaw.
“Your heart is not as beautiful as mine”, said old man standing in front of him. The young man said, “If you believe you have the most beautiful heart than show it!”
The old man showed his heart to him. It was very rough, uneven, and had scars all over. The heart had some rough edges, some parts were removed and fitted with other pieces.
The young man looked at the old man’s heart and laughed.” My dear old man, are you mad? Compare your heart and mine. My heart looks perfect and smooth and yours is a mess of scars and tears.”
“Your heart has its beauty, but I would never trade yours for mine “, said the old man. “You see, each scar shows where I have given my love. Sometimes people give me a piece of their heart, and it fills the space as best it can. Other times, I have given my love and gotten nothing in return. Those are the empty spaces. They hurt, but they show me that I can love and love again.”
The young man and the crowd stood silently with tears running down their cheeks. Then the young man walked to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart, ripped a piece out of it and offered it to the man with trembling hands.
The old man gratefully received the offering, placed it in his heart. Then he took piece from his old heart and placed it in the young man’s heart.
The young man looked at his heart. It didn’t look shiny and smooth like it used to. But, it was now more beautiful, because now he could feel the love from the old man’s heart flowing into him. They embraced and walked away side by side.
