Teaches an easy 4 step plan for following instructions. Barbara Lester, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, teaches a 4 step strategy to get children to listen and follow instructions (or follow directions). Reduce noncompliance by teaching children exactly how to comply and then reward them for doing it! The plan consists of getting children to look at the speaker, say "OK", do the task right away, and then (if it involves leaving the room) to check back. Ways to interest children in the plan are included such as using rewards and asking them to do things that they want to do (such as "please go get the cookies"). This kind of step by step plan can work for any child, but is especially useful for children with special needs of some kind or who have executive functioning deficits, such as children with high functioning autism, Asperger's Syndrome, or ADHD.
