Car AC Not Working (Key Causes And Solutions). In this video tutorial I will show you how to fix car AC not working.
Here is what causes it and how to fix the issue;
Malfunctioning car AC compressor.
The AC compressor is designed to circulate the refrigerant while compressing it from high to low pressure into the AC condenser.
To diagnose a faulty AC compressor, do the following;
1. Turn both the engine and the AC on.
2. Keep the AC at maximum cool and set the fans to high mode.
3. Try engaging the clutch on the compressor and watch out for the following:
• A lack of clutch engagement while the refrigerant is sufficient indicates an issue with voltage; therefore, check the amount of voltage passed to the compressor.
• In case voltage is present, conduct a clutch assessment; however, a lack of voltage may indicate a malfunctioning cycling switch, low refrigerant pressure, or a blown fuse.
To fix this issue, replace the AC compressor by doing the following;
• Locate the compressor belt and disengage it.
• Gently unplug the electrical cables connected to the compressor.
• Assess the drive belt for any damages and replace it if any.
• Remove the refrigerant lines from the compressor.
• Carefully remove the bolts holding the compressor in place and remove the defective compressor.
• Fit the new compressor into place and plug back the connecting cables.
• Reassemble the compressor belt and conduct a vacuum test.
• Recharge and test your AC compressor.
Leaking refrigerant.
Another problem that may stop your AC from working is a leaking refrigerant. The fluid is designed to vaporize at extremely low temperatures, thereby leaving a cooling effect inside the vehicle.
To diagnose a leaking refrigerant;
• Watch out for hissing sound from the compressor system.
• Visually inspect for oil on hoses and pipes fitted to the compressor.
• Spray soapy water on the internal parts of the AC and watch out for bubbles.
• Use a sniffer device to detect leaks after vacuuming dust away from the system.
Correct this issue by mixing leak sealant and refrigerant in the air conditioning system to seal the leaks if the leakage is minimal. If the leakage is large, consider involving a professional to fix it.
Dirty air filter
Since the cabin air filters are installed to filter dirt from the air entering the cooling system, they may become clogged with dust or debris over time. To locate filters, find the plastic cover under the dashboard or glove box, depending on your car model. Once you have removed the dirt, use a vacuum cleaner to clean off the blockages in the filter compartment and replace the old filter with a new one.
