The Black Virgin of Montserrat - why is She black? Let's figure it out: for what or for whom do millions of people flock to Montserrat every year? What attracts pilgrims and tourists from all over the world, people of different nationalities and religions?
Who have we not met in Montserrat during our tour guiding practice, including even real Tibetan monks! What is the reason for such incredible popularity of the place?
And the reason for it all is the Virgin of Montserrat. Our Lady of Montserrat, the Black Madonna, or "La Moreneta" (Darkie), as the Catalans affectionately call the image of the Virgin. In general, the cult of black Madonnas is a phenomenon quite typical for medieval Europe.
