What We can Learn about ocean conservation from Beyond Blue (2020). In this video I hope to dive into the world of Marine Conservation and commentate on how it is presented in the 2020 video game Beyond Blue. The game's story has 3 main conservation stories with it: illegal undersea mining, Harmful Algae blooms, and a story of hope. In the ocean there are hydrothermal vents, they are formed when superheated water from within the earth comes out of cracks in the seafloor, bringing with it plenty of minerals. This has drawn the attention of mining companies. In Beyond Blue, the sounds of one of these operations disturbs the local sperm whales the protagonist is studying, and later in the game when diving in the depths she comes across the remnants of the operation. The effects of a Harmful algae bloom is the emotional core of this video game. The game though seems to depict only one small aspect of this phenomenon, the toxins, they can also create dead zones, where the algae becomes so plentiful it actually uses up all the oxygen in the water column. Finally, because the developers understand that talking about conservation can be really depressing, they put in a story of hope. The local leatherback population was wiped out in the recent past, but they are coming back with a team of teenage conservationists spearheading the return. This is a wonderful inspirational story to give hope for the future. Beyond this you can find plenty of human garbage.

Beyond Blue (2020) is a game made by E-line media in association with Oceanx and the BBC Natural History Unit, allowing you to explore and discover the ocean. Taking place in the oceans of the near future, you play as scientist and explorer Dr. Mirai Soto. You interact with marine wildlife: like whales, giant squids, turtles, and ocean sunfish.

This is Backyard Expeditions. Here you can find wildlife footage and short documentaries on the natural world. Nature is full of surprises, often amazing things are happening just feet from you door. I am a biology student who was inspired by the likes of the BBC natural history unit, PBS, and animal planet as a Child. I have also long been a hobbyist photographer, filming interesting things over time.
