What is duotone effect?
In a general sense, an image printed with two inks (tones), synonymous with "two-tone". In a more precise sense of digital image processing in two dimensions, a duotone is a grayscale file (ie: A black-and-white image) containing one or more transfer curves applicable to other inks. That is: There is only one source of information but more than one curve is provided to apply to more than one printing plate.
That is why duotones differ from multichannels in that the former only have one channel although they generate more than one plate, while the second have as many channels as plates generate. The difference is relevant when retouching a duotone, since the inks can not be treated differently or partially. The only thing that can be done is to alter the curve that is applied to each ink.
There are those who distinguish "duotone" from a bitono saying that the twelfths are only duotones with an equalized background that have an image of another key "over", but that distinction is not very relevant today.
