More than Numbers (Death Toll Counter) - Hawaii, Maui, Lahaina
In August 2023, the wildfires on Maui destroyed Lahaina. I woke up in the middle of the night because the strong winds. Many places don't have AC so we sleep with the windows open here. Therefore, that night I smelled smoke and was confused. In the morning, I learned it was the strong Western wind blowing ash and smoke to Oahu. The news kept being played everywhere I went and I kept seeing the different news stations cover the same sad story but the death toll was higher each time. I donated directly to affected families, continue to act locally, and will island hop to Maui soon.
In 2025, the highways like H1 on Oahu now show a traffic death toll counter for the year which reminded me of those days in 2023.
