The attractions of the Javanese traditional performance of Tri Tunggal, with attractions that are interesting and missed by many people, are pencak silat, singo arema and angry bullfighting performances.
History of the Bulls
The bull that has been born since the royal era of the Singasari Kingdom (the site of the Jago–Tumpang temple) is very closely related to Pencak Silat . Although during the Ken Arok kingdom, the art form of the bull was not what it is today, which is in the form of a dancing bull's head mask. Because the dance movements that are played are adopted from the Kembangan Pencak Silat movement.
It's not strange indeed, because in the beginning Bantengan was an element of entertainment for every Pencak Silat player every time he finished doing routine exercises. Each bull group has at least 2 bulls as well as one pair, namely male and female bulls.
Although growing from among Pencak Silat colleges, at this time the Art of Bantengan has stood alone as part of the traditional art so that not all Pencak Silat colleges in Indonesia have a Bantengan Group and vice versa.
The development of the art of Bantengan
The majority of the development of Bantengan art is in rural communities or suburban areas on mountain slopes throughout East Java, specifically Bromo-Tengger-Semeru, Arjuno-Welirang, Anjasmoro, Kawi and Raung-Argopuro.
The bantengan art game is played by two people who act as the front legs as well as the holder of the bull's head and the controller of the bantengan dance and the hind legs which also act as the bull's tail. The bull costume is usually made of black cloth and a mask in the form of a bull's head made of wood and the bull's real horn.
This bull is always accompanied by a group of people who play typical bantengan music with musical instruments in the form of gongs, drums, and others. This art is played by two men, one in the front as the head, and one in the back as the tail. and usually, the man in front would be in a trance, and the man behind him would follow his every move.
Not infrequently the person in the back is also in a trance. However, it is very rare for people in the back to be in a trance while the front is not. The bantengan is helped to be in a trance by people (males) who wear red clothes commonly called abangan and black shirts which are usually called irengan.
The bull is always accompanied by a tiger. This tiger costume is made of dyed cloth (usually yellow and orange stripes), which is worn by a man. This tiger usually helps the bull in a trance and holds it if the trance gets too fierce. But not infrequently tigers are also possessed.
