Fill-finish is the final manufacturing step (and arguably the most critical) in the overall drug manufacturing process. It comes after upstream bioprocessing, otherwise known as the formation of the active agent by a cell culture or fermentation. It also takes place after downstream purification.
Buffers are used to help maintain a stable pH value for other solutions that may be mixed with them. The buffer solution is typically made up of weak acids and their conjugates - bases or amphoteric compounds - paired together in what is referred as "the buffering pair". The buffer resists changes in the acidity of the whole solution when a small amount of a different acid or alkali is introduced into the solution either through addition or via any chemical reaction within the solution. Buffer solutions are therefore very useful in a wide variety of applications in which relatively stable acidity is required.
