Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy - Packer - VMware Fusion
Learn how to Install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Linux Jammy Jellyfish to VMware Fusion using Packer. In this short video, I'll step through my build script, the Packer HCL file, and the user-data file used to bootstrap the OS.
Here's what the script and Packer accomplish:
Get the daily build of the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Server ISO image
Get the iso checksum of the file from the official site
Update the config files with the ISO Checksum, Downloads Folder, Guest Username, Guest Password, and Guest Encrypted password.
Build a new VM in VMware Fusion or Workstation (I've only tested with Fusion)
Set the build/ssh user to allow sudo without prompting for password
Resize the Logical Volume/Volume Group to use 100% of the specified disk size
Install: openssh-server, open-vm-tools, cloud-init, whois, zsh, wget, tasksel
Ubuntu Installation is completed by the script and a ready image with snapshot is prepared for your testing :)
NOTE: During the video there was question as to the issue with the snapshot not showing in Fusion until I created a manual snapshot. The Packer snapshot gets automatically created at the NEXT action taken on the VM. For example, at the end of the process, if I simply Power ON the new VM in Fusion, the packer snapshot appears!
