During the Year of the Family, we will discuss the family traditions of one of the capital's oldest communities, the Moscow Tatars, in two chronological perspectives: old merchant Moscow (the Zamoskvorechye Tatar settlement) and everyday life in the Soviet city.

How were marriages concluded in the Tatar merchant community? What rituals accompanied a Moscow Tatar wedding? Where can we find information about the composition of Moscow Tatar families in the early 20th century? What is the "Tatar patch" in Izmailovsky Park, and why do many Moscow families originate there? Why could a religious ceremony (nikah) be held without the newlyweds? Where did accordion players come from for weddings in Moscow?

We will discuss all of this at the next meeting of the "Field Work" lecture series.

Lecturer: Marat Safarov, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, researcher of the social history of the Tatars.
