Congruence and similarity are geometric concepts that describe the relationships between different figures or objects.
Congruence:
Congruence refers to the property of two or more geometric figures being identical in shape and size. When two figures are congruent, all corresponding angles are equal, and all corresponding sides are of equal length. In other words, if you can superimpose one figure onto another so that they completely overlap, they are considered congruent. Congruence is denoted by the symbol ≅.
Similarity:
Similarity, on the other hand, refers to the property of two or more geometric figures having the same shape but possibly different sizes. When two figures are similar, their corresponding angles are equal, but their corresponding sides are proportional. In other words, the ratios of the lengths of corresponding sides in similar figures are equal. Similarity is denoted by the symbol ~.
To summarize:
Congruent figures are identical in shape and size, with corresponding angles and sides being equal.
Similar figures have the same shape but can be different in size, with corresponding angles being equal and corresponding sides being proportional.
It is important to note that congruence implies similarity, but similarity does not necessarily imply congruence. Congruent figures are always similar, but similar figures may not be congruent.
