The Cuban exiles who arrived in Wisconsin in 1980 as part of the Mariel Boatlift have become family to one another. They are Wisconsinites. But their hearts remain in Cuba, and they want to visit their homeland one more time — if they can find a way.

Most of the Cuban exiles have one wish: to visit Cuba so they can hug family, eat roasted pig and walk the streets of their old neighborhoods. But most of the people interviewed for “Uprooted” can’t go back because of paperwork complications or past criminal convictions. They hope they can find a legal pathway – or a support network – to help them go home one more time.
