Comic vs. Movie: Uzumaki (Junji Ito) - Side-by-Side Comparison
Junji Ito has become one of the greatest exponents of the Horror genre. The mangaka has an immense amount of masterpieces, but if there is one that stands out above the rest, along with Tomie, that's Uzumaki.
Uzumaki is the tale of a disaster that looms over Kurouzu, a small Japanese village on the coast, due to the mysterious and devastating effect of spirals. Throughout its 19 chapters, the teenager Kirie witnesses how all her loved ones and friends are driven to madness, murder, mutilation or mutation by their sick obsession with spirals.
Ito's wild imagery, both in the story and in the drawing, make Uzumaki a very challenging manga comic to bring to the screen. Besides the failed Live Action attempt by Alexandre Aja, a 4-episode Anime adaptation produced by Adult Swim and directed by Hiroshi Nagahama is planned.
However, many people are unaware or have forgotten that there is already a film adaptation of Uzumaki in 2000, and a fairly faithful one, despite its tight budget. The film is directed by Higuchinsky, who also directed the adaptation of Junji Ito's manga Long Dream in the same year.
With this video we want to dust off this cult classic and highlight the filmmaker's love and respect for Junji Ito's work, comparing each shot with its respective comic strip.
