Alien vs Predator VS Prometheus - Similarities
If you have experienced a sudden déjà vu watching "Prometheus" after having seen "Alien vs. Predator" (or vice versa), don't worry, it's perfectly normal. As much as Ridley Scott does not like "Alien vs Predator", going so far as to say, literally: "I think Alien vs Predator was a daft idea", the fact is that "Prometheus" reminds in too many points to Paul W.S. Anderson's film, both in terms of plot and mise en scene, and this not because they both share the Alien universe, but because they share a significant amount of the script and basically the whole idea and development of the story.
We must accept that both films already recycle quite a few ideas from "Alien" (1979), with the peculiarity that both rescue elements discarded from the original script by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett that were never shot, such as the urns and the pyramid.
And it is also necessary to say that both "Prometheus" and "Alien vs. Predator" (and "Alien" itself) are strongly inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's long story "At the Mountains of Madness" (1936). Lovecraft's story involves a scientific/archeological expedition to an inhospitable wilderness, huge alien ruins of the first inhabitants of Earth, the history of these beings in murals and hieroglyphics, corpses of the most technologically superior alien species (Elder Things), and living specimens of the deadly biological organism that was created by these aliens and ended up rebelling against them (Shoggoths).
The similarities between the stories is such that Guillermo del Toro even said that one of the reasons why he no longer wanted to adapt "At the Mountains of Madness" is that Ridley Scott had already done so in "Prometheus".
