What if the Apocalypse had already happened... on the internet? The proof: images of Jesus as a shrimp invading our abandoned Facebook news feeds and racking up millions of likes and comments. “Shrimp Jesus,” the AI-powered Lord of the Crustaceans, is one of the many manifestations of the “Dead Internet” theory, a somewhat outlandish conspiracy theory that nonetheless reveals a very real change on the web: bots are replacing us. Today, more than half of internet traffic is generated by bots, and most of our online interactions are therefore almost entirely devoid of human connection. Tracks meets with the artists who are preparing the funeral of the World Wide Web and imagining life after the disconnection.
Artist Aleks Slota, known for his extreme performances, has become a collector of religious images generated by AI on a zombie internet in its final hours. The duo !Mediengruppe Bitnik searches for the source of the algorithmic dictates that influence our worldview, while Lou Fauroux takes us on a digital detox after the web's collapse.
